Driver's license requirements What are Your Driver's License Requirements for Renting in the US and Canada? Customers who reside in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Canada must present a valid, unexpired government-issued driver's license which includes a photograph of the customer. If f acial recognition identifies similar photos as possible matches, an interim driver's license or identifcation card is issued. The interim product looks the same as a permanent product with the word 'INTERIM' printed in red across the front and the expiry date and outlined in red. The interim product is valid for 15 days.

New York drivers will now be able to print out a temporary license from the comfort of their home, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.
The new print-at-home program will apply to current drivers to print out a temporary license from the state Department of Motor Vehicles' website when renewing or replacing their permanent license.
The printing feature eliminates the need for a trip to the DMV for drivers who need to re-up their license, and will also apply to those replacing their learner permits or non-driver identification cards. The service was previously available for vehicle registrations.
“This administration remains committed to streamlining the processes of government, and one of our focuses has been making DMV wait times shorter and services more convenient,” Governor Cuomo said. “We are bringing the DMV of New York into the 21st century and improving the way it serves millions of customers.”
The temporary document prints on normal 8 1/2-by-11 inch paper and will be valid for 60 days, over which time a permanent license will be mailed out, Cuomo's office said. The printable document has the state seal in the background.
Not everything needed for a license renewal can be done from your home, however. In order to renew, a driver has to submit proof he or she passed an eye test administered by a state-approved provider. Commercial driver license holders, meanwhile, have to renew in person at a DMV office or kiosk.
The printable license holds the same strength as a temporary license from a DMV office, which has traditionally been given to drivers as they await their permanent documentation.
In New York, online DMV transactions have risen steadily in recent years, according to Cuomo's administration.
Last year, the state DMV's website handled 5.5 million transactions, up from 4 million in 2011.

Interim Driver’s License - Additonal Step Towards your Unrestricted Driver's License
Interim Drivers License is one of the intermediate steps in the Graduate Drivers License (GDL) program. The interim license is usually issued to driver’s licenseapplicants who are under 18 years of age and have already passed both the written permit test and the driver’s license test at the DMV and have held the learner’s permit for the required period of time.

Why Do We Need Interim Driver’s License
The interim drivers license is required to ensure that young drivers are submerged into their on-road experience slowly and that they absorb all the required skills that will make them safe and responsible drivers. Most studies show that young people are prone to risk-taking behavior, which makes them a danger to themselves and those that surround them. The interim drivers license poses certain restrictions at young drivers, restrictions that were designed to reduce the risk of accidents on the road.
Common Interim Drivers License Restrictions
Although the restrictions that are posed at the interim license holder are much more liberal than the restrictions posed at learner’s permit holders, they still must be observed thoroughly under the penalty of license revocation.
The key difference between the learners license and the interim driver’s license is the fact that the interim driver’s license holder may drive without being supervised by a licensed driver.

- speed limit restrictions
Please make sure that you check the interim drivers license restrictions that are specific to your state.
Switching from Interim Drivers License to The Unrestricted Driver’s License
This is usually done automatically once the interim drivers license holder reaches the age of 18 or 19, depending on the state. Many states have the requirement that the interim license holder may have no convictions during the holding period, otherwise the holding period may be extended or the license may be revoked. Taking a drivers ed course may help you obtain your unrestricted drivers license in certain states much sooner.
